What to consider when designing a logo for BrandBucket

Designing Logos for BrandBucket Business Names

How does it work?

We allow talented graphic designer to join our community. Once you have applied and been approved, you can pick from a selection of names that require a logo. Each name has what we call a “reward or prize” and is anywhere from $100-$500.

Once you design the logo and upload it to BrandBucket the name gets listed for sale. Once it sells you will receive the reward. That's the gist of it, but there is more details involved so read on to find out.

What are the awards for designing logo for BrandBucket?

Every logo has an award amount selected by the domain owner. Awards range from $100 - $500 per logo. Awards are paid when a domain name sells.

Based on your level in our community you can see domain names that require a logo at different prize levels, and you can select the name (reserve it) and start designing your logo

We will notify you via email immediately once a name has been sold. You can expect to receive your payment approximately 14 days after the sale. Occasionally the domain name transfer to the buyer is delayed, in which case we may delay your payment until we are sure the transaction is clear and underway — never more than 30 days.

Who owns the logo?

The logo remains yours until the name is sold. BrandBucket makes sure that your logo is only visible on the website in a small JPEG thumbnail. We make sure that any source code files are safe and are only given to buyers that have completed escrow — at which time you will be paid for your work.

Joining the BrandBucket Designer Community

How do I sign up?

Visit our page here: https://www.brandbucket.com/logo-designers for info and complete the sign up form and create an account on BrandBucket.

We will email you to verify your e-mail address by logging into your BrandBucket account.

Submitting your portfolio

At sign up, please make sure to give us a link to your portfolio in the portfolio URL section. We carefully review your submittal and based on the number of available logo designer positions within the BrandBucket community as well as your logo design style and its compatibility with our target audience you will be chosen to join.

Our credit system

You will be given credits that will allow you to pick domains to design for. The higher the reward for the logo design the higher the number of credits, so pick wisely. You will also receive more credits when domains are sold with your logo. You can check your credits in your profile once signed in to your BrandBucket account.

Get designing

You will need to reserve a domain that is available for design. Once you pick one, start designing as you have 48 hours to submit the logo. If this logo is approved we will showcase it along with the domain name for sale and once it is sold you are awarded the prize associated with the domain which is anywhere between $100-500 per logo. Currently we allow one designer to design a logo for each domain name, but we reserve the right to add up to three designers to create a logo per domain name and only one is awarded if picked at time of purchase.

Time allowance

You will have a 48 hour period to design the logo once you pick a domain name. We understand that this is a tight deadline, but our domain owners appreciate us showcasing their domains as quickly as possible. We recommend not to pick a domain name until you are ready to start working on it. If you miss the deadline it is placed for other designers to pick and you may not be able to pick it again. Your credits will be reimbursed if you do miss a deadline.

Uploading a logo

Upload the logo option you wish to submit in the Logo section.  You will need to submit both a thumbnail version of png and the source files in illustrator (see below).

How do I reserve a name to design for?

Here are the steps to reserve a domain name to design a logo for and uploading your logo files once done.

To reserve a name

  4. Select the name you wish to design for by clicking on the “Reserve” button next to the name.
  5. The name will be reserved for you for a period of 48 hours. If you do not upload a design within that timeframe, it will be returned to the main list for other designers to reserve.

Why do I have to upload the original files?

When the domain name is sold with your logo we are required to send these files to the buyer. BrandBucket needs to make sure this is available. We make sure that these files are only sent after a domain name is sold.

What Constitutes a Great Logo for BrandBucket?

Our tips for designing logos that sell

  1. Take into consideration the name’s description and use cases, but keep in mind your design should be as generic as its name and description allows.
  2. Since the name is what is for sale, it should take primary space on the canvas, with only minimal secondary design elements.
  3. Backgrounds should be transparent.
  4. Using darker colors for the typeface often works best for contrast.
  5. Follow current design trends: use modern colors, avoid drop-shadows, beveling and gradation.
  6. Avoid adding the “.com” or any trademark symbols.

What to consider when designing a logo for BrandBucket

Applicability

This is the most important part of the design process. Since the names do not have a client yet. Read the name description, use cases, and keywords. Design for inspiration and do not confine the buyer to one industry or use case. Don't go too far or too deep in representing the industry, highlight the feel of the name with slight hints of potential use. Colors and font selection are key here.

Easy to read

The name should be viable and readable, non symbolic, negative space should be used with care as sometimes might hinder readability. Simple, clear, minimal modern font selection is key. If the name is comprised of two words, use of different but complimentary colors to highlight the two word concatenation is encouraged. Darker font colors are encouraged for ease of readability.

Simple design

Adding a design element to a name is encouraged but only if it will not distract from the actual readability of the name. Keep in mind that design elements can also restrict the usability of a name. Select your design elements carefully and do not stick to an industry or vertical. Use symbols to excite the creative aspect of the name and the inspirational side of the design.

Presentation

Use enough white space (transparent) around your logo when cropping both of the images you will be providing. We recommend a minimum of a 15px white transparent space border. Use transparent background. No borders, crop marks or shadows. Be careful with long names as the font might get smaller, good selection of condensed fonts in that case in encouraged to maintain height.
