Branding a Pandemic

Branding a Pandemic

Earlier today NPR Politics’ Twitter channel (@nprpolitics) sparked a contest to rename the Swine Flu in what we call an attempt in branding a pandemic.  This comes on the heels of the announcement from the Centers for Disease Control attempting to rename the flu “Influenza A virus subtype H1N1″, a name that isn’t nearly as catchy and, dare we say brandable, as the original Swine Flu moniker.

The suggestions coming from the collective of Twitter users are very clever and amusing, many playing off of the overzealous media hype surrounding the flu outbreak.  Here are some of our favorites so far:

  • 2009 Snoutbreak
  • Hamdemic
  • Aporkalypse
  • Hamorrhoids
  • The Other White Flu
  • Hogwarts
  • The Igpay Lufay
  • Influenzoink
  • MadSow
  • Wilburculosis
  • Spam-demic
  • Pork Flu Yung
  • Swine Eleven
  • (update) Hamthrax

We’ll keep watching (and laughing) and post more as they get passed around. To follow the contest search Twitter for #namethatflu. If you come across a particularly clever name, feel free to suggest it to us here or on Twitter (@BrandBucket). Happy Friday everyone!
